Institute for Cultural Management

ATTENTION: This information is out of date! There will be an update in October 2009.

The Institute for Cultural Management was founded in 1990 as an institution of the Ludwigsburg University of Education. It is the oldest institution of its type at a German university, offering an extensive range of qualifications upon graduation including doctorate, masters and graduate courses.

Our aim is to provide a practical course based on scientific knowledge. Students learn how to organise and develop cultural projects and institutions with the most up to date techniques.

In Ludwigsburg there are three possibilities for the study of Cultural Management:

1.

The German titled 'Magister' programme is offered as a four semester foundation study and upon graduation students are accredited with the German title ‚Magister artium' (MA). It is the most comprehensive course in Ludwigsburg and teaches students the disciplines of cultural management and cultural science as well as practical management of cultural projects and institutions and their content. Due to the complexity of the course, entry is only permitted if specific subjects have already been studied to degree standard. This is a full time course. Fees are not charged. (further information here)

2.

The Masters programme is also a four semester foundation study which is accredited with the internationally recognised 'Master of arts' (MA). It is aimed solely at people working within a cultural institution who wish to study parallel to their work commitments. The academic content concentrates on the subject of cultural management with minimal study of cultural science. The duration of the course consists of about twenty compact lectures (every Friday and Saturday), two intensive weeks (Monday to Friday) and ten study letters. This is a post-graduate course whose precondition for entry is a completed degree to at least diploma or bachelor class. There is no precondition as to what subject the degree is in. Fees are charged for this course, each semester costs about 1.600,- Euro. (further information in German here)

3.

he contact course is designed for people with a position within a cultural institution who from time to time wish to further their knowledge in certain theoretical and practical subject areas. In total there are seminars in twenty five subjects which can be freely selected. Each seminar lasts one and a half days (every Friday and Saturday) and costs 150 Euro. After taking part in ten seminars attendants can opt to take an examination to receive a advanced certificate in further education from the University of Education. (further information in German here)

On successful completion of a 'Magister' or 'Masters' course with above average examination performance the possibility exists to study for a PhD. To receive their PhD students must present a dissertation, and explain and defend their findings in a viva (oral examination). (further information In German here)

As well as the possibilities for study the Ludwigsburg Institute for Cultural Management is active in research. Students in their final phase of study and writing their dissertations research the problems of cultural management, whose findings are often directly integrated into the management of cultural institutions. The lecturers at the institute often have their work in publications. They also work as advisors - often in teams together with students - in solving practical and theoretical solutions. The Ludwigsburg Institute specialises in cultural finance, cultural marketing and culture development planning.
